I received a call today from the mother of a 6 month old. Baby has been
nursing well until about 2 weeks ago. The baby has begun "chewing" on the
breast. Mom denies use of bottles or pacifiers, baby seems well. Mother's
nipples are sore, cracked, and bleeding. She visited her MD this morning
and was put on naproxen for pain and given Elocon (mometasone) cream for
nipples, twice a day. The MD has instructed her not to breastfeed for 7
days because of the cream. She is planning to pump and dump if she needs to.

The baby was on amoxicillin for ear infection "not long ago" per mom and had
thrush at 2 weeks old. She didn't see any white spots in baby's mouth.

I can't find Elocon in any of my references. Does anyone have any
information on this and a suggestion for an alternative compatable with
breastfeeding?

This sounds to me like it might be yeast but without signs in baby? Could
the "chewing" baby is doing be caused by thrush?

I would really appreciate help with this one since mom really wants to
continue to breastfeed.
