I have to admit, when I was training to teach muzzleloading (a gun which
loads at the muzzle) I got to the nipple part (that is a brass insert which
holds the charge. The hammer strikes the nipple, the gun is supposed to
discharge) and got laughing. We (the 2 male instructors, myself and 6 other
male students) laughed all weekend about dropping nipples, cold brass
nipples (it was November, and cold!), losing nipples.

In the context of muzzleloading, the men had no problems with the word
nipple. When it was associated with the human body, that's when it caused
problems/embarrassment.

It was ironic to be a lactation consultant with a muzzleloader, we thought.
I went from being "the boob lady" to being "the nipple lady." I was glad
when the weekend was over, my sides hurt so bad from laughing, I thought I
was coming down with the flu!

Best wishes,
Sam Doak

The event was our Pennsylvania Breastfeeding Coalition's training (under a
Federal grant) in how to talk to businesses about ways to support their
breastfeeding employees and benefit their own bottom line. Turns out that a
key lesson is "Never say the word 'breast' !" Employers, it seems, don't
even want to THINK about the fact that their workers have breasts.)>>
