I have been providing some trainings by using some videos called "Keys to
Caregiving" which show mother-baby interactions in the hospital. These
videos are beautiful - and help to demonstrate the cues we are trying to
teach mothers, nurses, staff, etc. However, I was struck with the
appearance and calm of the mothers seen there... These aren't the moms I
see in the hospital - these are the moms I USED to be/see 10, 15, 20, 30
years ago, when moms were in the hospital 4 - 6 days. They had time to
recover, had time to learn about their babies, and the nurses had time to
meet them, know them and interact with them.

I think we need to (and here she goes, being triggered in another
direction) realize that the health care being offered now in hospitals, as
well as the education we can offer there is unacceptable. If we can't keep
moms in the hospital longer, then we need to create another
support/education service or program. Baby Clubs like our Kaiser hospitals
are offering now? Home visiting such as was presented by Dr. Heinig in the
ILCA Conference? I don't know...
