Here in Israel, we have the same problem of breastfed babies who slip off
the chart when they start solids. Of course, what solids are they giving?
Vegetable soup, which is wonderful when you are on a diet, or a mixture of
various non-allergenic fruits, which are a bit higher in calories, but not
as calorie-rich as breast milk. Usually, the first recommendation is to stop
breastfeeding so that the baby will eat even more of this diet food and thus
gain more weight????

I explain to the moms that the babies were gaining well on their milk, so
the problem is the veggie soup, and not the milk, so let's make the veggie
soup richer in calories. I suggest that they add tehina paste to the soup.
It is rich in iron, calcium , and of course calories.

We also have here something called shkedia which is an almond paste which
you can use to make almond milk, but can also be added to the fruit meal.
It is also rich in iron, calcium, and calories. It resembles tehina in that
it comes in a paste form.

I have never had a baby show any adverse reactions to either of these, and
the weight gain problem was fixed by adding a healthy food to the meals.
I also have them add fresh parsley to the veggie meal to increase iron
absorption and to add Vitamin C. According to the AAP, the whole reason
for adding solids at 6 months is to add an additional source of iron.
