Nikki,

I also wonder if it isn't a notion we put in mom's head before the birth.
Years ago while pregnant with my 4th I decided to take a maternity tour of
both local hospitals (I was having this one at home & since I am also a CBE
I thought it would be good for teaching). During the tour of the
labor/delivery rooms one of moms asked if the baby could be put immediately
on her chest - the nurse answered 'do you really want the baby on you when
it is still all yucky from the birth' (while nodding no with a look of
disgust on her face) then said 'I know you would really like it better if we
cleaned the baby up before we hand it to you' (while nodding yes & with a
smile on her face). Oh course, the mom agreed how much better that would
be.

I was so happy to be birthing at home again - especially since my hospital
born children had been given to me immediately (at the other hospital).
