Some suggested resources, all of which should be readily available to Liz
Baldwin, on attachment/bonding and separation of mom and babe:

Lawrence, RA and Lawrence, RM: Breastfeeding: A guide for the medical
profession, 5th ed., St. Louis, 1999, the C.V. Mosby Co. This authoritative
tome, written by the eminent Ruth A. Lawrence, MD, has a chapter on the
"psychologic impact of breastfeeding," at pp. 197-216. The focus is on
bonding during the newborn period for the nursing baby. BF is described as
having an impact psychologically on both mother and infant. Cites to
studies abound.

Riordan, J and Auerbach, K: Breastfeeding and Human Lactation, 2d ed.,
Sudbury, 1999, Jones and Bartlett Pub. Has thoughtful sections on
mother-infant attachment, and father-infant attachment (assuming that dad
and mom are together). See pages 58-59, 68, 611-617 and 687. Cites are
made to several studies. (This volume has a much more reader-friendly style
than the Lawrence resource.)

Newman, J and Pitman, T: Dr. Jack Newman's Guide to Breastfeeding, Toronto,
2000, HarperCollins Pub. Without citation to studies, Jack Newman discusses
this very issue in his pages on "Breastfeeding, Parental Separation and
Access" (pp. 315-316). This book was written for the nursing mother. Dr.
Newman's passages are without question the most supportive of the
mother/babe in these difficult situations -- but will have to be recogonized
as his opinion alone.
