Janna, I am not certified, so I don't have anything so formal as a protocol.
But in my less-formal mother-to-mother support, faced with this style of baby
or a baby thriving by chart but crabby, I first ask mom if she drinks or eats
a lot of dairy, and also ask her about her feeding pattern, in either order.
Then I would tend to mention both as the two most likely causes for this
kind of stool issue, and suggest whichever one seems more likely as a
contributor -- if in fact either seems likely, though usually one of them
does. This month I have made out like a magician twice on oversupply, and
once on dairy :) But the point is to listen to the individual mother and
baby's eating patterns, rather than doing either one first all the time in
the manner that the word "protocol" suggests.
