Unfortunately, many of the electric pumps provided may not be appropriate
for building and maintaining supply when exclusively pumping, particularly
for a premie. The scaled down Medela pumps only have an on/off switch and
suction control. Many mothers have trouble maintaining supply for
separations for work when they are bf when with their babies.

Other pumps are being offered now and I am not seeing good results. Some
mothers are given a list of 3-4 pumps to choose from and randomly choose
what sounds good to them.

Teaching hands-on pumping is key. I encourage mothers to watch the Stanford
University Maximizing Production video while pumping to help them figure
out what works for them.
