Years ago when I was a new LLL leader, the leaders in our town received
several calls from a man who wanted to ask questions about breastfeeding. We
would always ask if we could take his name and phone number, as well as referral
information, and when would be a good time to call back and talk with his
wife, and that we would return the call when we had a better time to discuss
the matter. He never would give us information but would call another leader in
a few days. He made the rounds before he figured out that we were not going
to talk to him. When I teach peer counselors, I tell them whenever you have
the slightest suspicion about a caller, to ask first for their name, address,
phone number and where they got the phone number and tell them that the peer
counselor would return the call in a few minutes.
It never hurts to be careful. Especially in this age when a phone number can
be entered into an Internet site, and your name, address and directions to
your house pops up.
