renate, i have seen a couple of mothers who were hoping that they were making
"some" milk and so were only supplementing their babies with a small amount.
enough to keep the baby barely urinating, not stooling, and nursing all the
time. i see it as sort of a denial of their true level of milk production and
an attempt to make more milk quickly (in the way that would work for another
mother, perhaps) by just keeping the baby nursing all the time.

or in the case of donor milk and wanting to avoid using formula, they might
not be supplementing enough (here is where the cost and the "you can't use
donor milk 'just' because you don't make milk and don't want to use formula"
position begins to infuriate me, not that the milk bank causes the cost
problem, but because insurance won't cover it).

sadly enough, i sometimes use the scale to "prove" the mother isn't making
enough milk.

ps tandem nursing - i really like the "attitude unbecoming an LC" idea but
you have to know - and i have posted about this before, i think - this is the
prevailing attitude. it is even taught in breastfeeding rounds in the medical
school here (that someone who nurses a baby over two years has a need for
therapy because there is a psychological problem).
