After reading Laurie Wheeler's last post, I am completely befuddled as to
how a hospital can allow a physician to practice that far from the standard
of care. If an internist wanted to write an order that all his adult
patients only be fed 2 meals a day and the dietician may not speak to them
no matter what would that be allowed too?
Could a patient or two be encouraged to complain (especially those who have
a non-staff physician who are simply stuck with this guy for a few days?)
Is there not one educated mom who has been subjected to this guy who knows
how awful this advice is?
I can understand how physicians can feel less than excited about the
touchy-feely benefits of breastfeeding. I don't expect my colleagues who
aren't flooded with prolactin and oxytocin like I am (and have been for a
large portion of my adult life) to be as passionate about the importance of
breastfeeding. But to completely ignore all the scientific evidence about
our children's health and recommend practices which have no basis in reality
is just unconscionable.
