Hi Janice,

I have not worked in an OB GYN office, but thought I would share one thing I
tried in collaboration with some OB physician's in my area that did NOT
work. I put a large, beautiful gift basket filled with useful items for a
newborn and breastfeeding mother, it was about $100 or slightly more in
retail value, in 3 OB Office waiting rooms. I put a sign beside the baskets
asking mothers to sign up to win the basket sponsored by the lactation
center so they knew it had something to do with breastfeeding. I had the
final registration date on the sign also. . The slip they filled out asked
for their name, phone number and due date. I left it in the offices for
about 2 months. I drew names and delivered the baskets to the winning
mothers. I know for certain that one of the 3 never did breastfeed. After
the drawing ended I called every mother who entered in order of due date so
as to try to speak to them before they had their babies. During the call I
asked how they planned to feed their baby. In most cases, I had an
opportunity to discuss the benefits of breastfeeding and told them about the
support offered at the peds practice where I was working under the auspices
of the grant. I believe that NO mother expressed an interest in learning
more about breastfeeding and NO mother changed her feeding decision due to
my phone call.

I had one call where the mother had miscarried and I did offer her some
emotional support and resources for dealing with that. This is totally out
of my professional expertise and not the point of calling, but I myself had
3 miscarriages previously and went through a grieving process and I have
some counseling skills so I did it .It is something one would need to be
prepared for if they were implementing a plan like this in the future.
