I have been approached by my manager for a position that she is creating
for an RN/LC for our PP unit. (I would use the term "lactation counselor"
until I could become certified as a lactation consultant. Since this is a
new position, I am looking for "forms" that we could use in our department
(breastfeeding assessment, nursing diagnoses and care plan, etc).

Our nursery "owns" (yes, that is the word used in our facility)
breastfeeding. As a PP nurse, I have always advocated that we are equally
responsible for breastfeeding. Our moms usually do not have documentation
of how breastfeeding is progressing. (Except when I chart on my
patients!).

Our breastfeeding rate is only average right now. I often wonder if our
liberal visiting hours are part of the problem. Do your facilities post
something outside of the patient's room when she is breastfeeding? I would
like to encourage our moms to tactfully request privacy when
breastfeeding. I don't feel that they are comfortable with nursing their
babies throughout the day when there are so many visitors in and out of
their rooms.

What are your thoughts?
