For a 45 hour course, I believe what should be emphasized is problems, solutions, talking to mothers and counseling mothers. Lots of hands on role playing. Ideally, the other 45 hours of the course could be online reinforcing what was just covered in the hands on workshop.

I have 26 years of experience in lactation beginning in La Leche League. What I see now is women who are getting those letters behind their name and then all the sudden they are experts in their field. That scares me. I believe that the certification should be quality and real life versus quantity. Also, I believe that a higher standard should be held when "passing" these exams....I certainly would not want to go to a doctor who barely scraped by med school and the lactation counselor and consultant should be held to the same exceptional standards. To be honest, I am embarrassed by some of the practices I see..."experts' who might see one case a month, have only been doing this for a few years vs. many years, and they know it all. Let's raise the standards of this profession.

We have to remember that those letters behind a name mean nothing....look at the experience behind the person.
