Kathy, I hear your point but disagree with it.

I am using this image to talk to people who already experience their breasts
as erotic, and who are not, in general, looking to reframe the cultural order
in which they find themselves. The goal with these mothers, who in the US
are the majority IMO, is to give them permission to ALSO think of their
breasts for something else -- something not only additional but even more
important. (We all know how Americans love work, fwiw.)

The mothers, on the other hand, who ARE willing to reframe their cultural
reference to cut out the erotic charge of breasts in order to better value
their breastfeeding function are not, for the most part, those who need to --
since they already, by definition, value the breastfeeding function. So
what do those mothers stand to gain?

Or to put it another way, I do not believe that there is momentum to abolish
the eroticization of breasts in this culture, and I do believe that there is
momentum to undermine the exclusivity of that association in a way that will
allow more bf. So who should the perfect be the enemy of the good.

(even allowing that de-eroticized breasts would be perfect. On the contrary
I am not so sure that sexualizing ears, elbows etc would not have its
advantages. If I can't dance I may not want to be part of your revolution,
so to speak...)
