I thought Liz Brook's post on the ethics of dining at the formula mfg trough
was excellent. I am helping to organize Day 1 of an ADA sponsored
presentation in San Antonio in Oct. It will have activity stations for
hands-on training for RDs to get experience with basic bfg equipment and
with hand expression. There will be several didatic lectures on basic bfg
management, and Dr. George Sharpe will talk about the Austin Milk Bank and
donor milk for preemies. IBLCE has wanted to find ways to get more LDs and
RDs interested in supporting lactation, as who better than a nutritionist to
appreciate the process?

Yesterday, as I was proof-reading the flier, I noted that there is a
reception the evening of the next day (it's a 2 day deal) sponsored by
Martek (!!) I have requested that the ADA folks clearly state on the flier
that the program is NOT sponsored by Martek. and that they specifically
describe Martek as hosting ONLY the optional reception. I told them that
this is how such companies manage to co-opt speakers and that I do not care
to have any apparant compromising involvement with manufacturers of formula
or formula additives.

Both Medela and Ameda/Hollister will partially co-sponsor the
breastfeeding workshop; that has been oked by IBLCE. I am very thankful
that the organizers gave me a chance to comment on the flier, because this
issue of Martek's hosting of an after-conf. reception (I would already have
been gone a full 24 hrs and might never have known about it!) might have
really come back to haunt me. These companies are very tricky about
associating themselves with "experts" and then capitalizing on the apparant
association.
