Check out James McKenna. I don't have the references handy at the
moment, but he has a website and I know he has published in peer
reviewed journals. HIs research is fascinating and I'm sure the
references on his articles will lead you to other literature on the
topic as well.
You can look him up on the web, or Medline or some other such medical
search tool.
