I recently read a very interesting article about breast feeding and milk
banking in Poland. It was written by Bogumila Penc and was published in the
Journal of Human Lactation, vol. 12, issue 3, pgs. 243-246.

According to this author, in a relatively few years, attitudes about breast
feeding were changed. This was a result of education of health care
providers and the public plus governmental support.

I was wondering what the availability of banked breast milk is in the USA
and elsewhere. It seems that the concerns that would arise from
transferring a bodily fluid from a stranger to an infant (infectious disease
transmission, bacterial contamination of the BM, etc) were addressed at this
Polish facility. The infant recipients were even matched to a donor whose
own child was roughly the same age (nutrient content of the BM).

If a country that is supposedly "less developed" than the USA can address
this problem so well, imagine what we could do!

I am very interested in comments and information on this subject; especially
from places other than the USA. I highly recommend reading this article.
