Hello all,
I recently spoke to a mother with an 8 week old who has been exclusively breastfeeding since birth and gaining well. She had to have the placenta manually removed after birth. At 7 weeks she started noticing that baby's stools were green and she began feeding on one side (as per internet foremilk/hindmilk information) but over the week this has not helped. Also at 7 weeks she had an increase in her vaginal bleeding,(she never stopped bleeding and her doctor was not concerned at her 6 week check-up) cramping and dizziness. She went to the hospital and they told her she most likely got her period. She had her blood levels checked for anaemia and they came back normal. It has been 7 days and she is still bleeding with bright red blood, not heavily, but noticeably. The baby seems to be gulping a lot more at breast, even with her attempts to down-regulate. Weight gain has been high - all signs of abundant milk supply. She's not worried about the green stools anymore because the baby is not really having any other issues, but my question is this: I've never heard of a women with retained placenta having abundant milk supply, usually it's a low supply problem. Is it possible that she retained a small amount of placenta that didn't result in a low milk supply, but now that she's passed it, she is having an increase in supply?
