Among other things I am an avid Rennie (Rennaissance Faire groupie).  The approach to bustlines in that "culture" seems to be "If you've got 'em, flaunt 'em and if you don't, use the bodice to enhance whatever you've got"!   Before my mastectomy and reduction, I was somewhat large (although not what many would consider really large).  The typical bodice fits under the bustline and gives some support to the breasts, but without containing them like a bra.  I found it very comfortable-more so than a bra.  Perhaps what is really needed is a sort of "shelf bra" that supports, but doesn't attempt to totally encase the breasts.
