SUBJECT: Lennart Nilssons odyssey of life
DATE: 11-27-96 14:22 EST
PRIORITY:

I watched this program last night and was again amazed at the intimacy and
love of life that radiates from Mr Nilssons work. However, I have been at a
loss as to how to communicate with him regarding the use of his work in
certain commercial advertising pieces that appear to me to go against this
philosophy. I can't help but wonder if he is aware of this.

Would you forward mail to him from this email site? or would you send me an
address (email or snailmail) to which I may write?

(My concern arises around the use of his embryo and fetal photography from A
CHILD IS BORN by a company that publishes "free" pregnancy education
magagzines aka magazines aka they are "free" because the advertisers buy space
that allows the company to publish. For the past several years, companies
that make artificial baby milk have bought the entire publication and each
succeeding yr there seems to be more double page spreads on how good ABM is
and what free or discounted merchandise you can get. NOt only does this go
against the WHO/UNICEF code about the marketing of breastmilk substitutes, but
it associates an artificial product with his life work.
In Sweden it might not matter--maternity is supported such that 95 % of
babies are breastfed the first year. In this country it is a much different
matter--perhaps 65% are, (from a low of 28% in the 50s) for a very short
while, and it is a struggle to maintain that. Evidence is increasingly
concrete that breastfed children and their parents make much fewer visits to
the hospital etc etc
Based on the conversations recorded in last nights program, I cant help but
think Mr Nilsson is unaware of the implications of the use of his
work--certainly there are some few situations where artificial milk is
lifesaving and to be celebrated--but it cannot be assumed that it does no harm
when it infringes on the more natural process.)

Thanks.!!!:')
