I've given her Dr. Newman's APNO recipe for the pharmacist to make up, and I
wonder about Gentian Violet - but have heard that it's not safe to use and
that it's an 'old fashioned' recipe for thrush? Does anyone know about this?

I had a personal experience with thrush with my youngest baby (never had
thrush before, and don't ever want it again) I tried the Nystatin etc. With no
help. Baby would heal I would not, baby would get thrush again. I consulted
my LLL leader, and Jack Newman's book "The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of
Answers," and with the advice of both, used the gentian violet (baby's thrush
GONE in 2 days) and also went to my primary care doctor for a script for
Diflucan. I was met with a lot of resistance because the dose is quite high, for
a long period of time, but fortunately I took the literature with me to the
doctor office, and the nurse practitioner who saw me even reported that "had
I not had the literature, there is no way she would have prescribed it" so
I told her to photocopy the literature and to hang it on the bulletin board
in the break room to "enlighten" the other doctors. Anyway, I used the
Diflucan as directed and have been rid of thrush for over a year now. I also used
Jack Newmans All Purpose Nipple cream and got immediate relief from the pain
and itching. I am including a link to Jack Newman's site that discusses
Diflucan (this is his own site) I hope it goes through, as I am not computer
savvy enough to put in the website addy correctly. Let me know if it doesn't
help. When I did the search all I did was put in "thrush Jack Newman" and it
popped right up.

Also you are right, those nipples looked downright horrific, poor
mama....congrats to her for caring enough for her babe to nurse through the obvious
discomfort.
