Hi - G6PD deficiency is an X-linked disorder...It occurs in low frequency among people from the
Mediterranean basin....Italians, Greeks, Arabs and Sephardic Jews..and I think among American
blacks. We see enough mothers with this to make it fairly common. People with this deficiency
can not take many drugs or eat certain foods which will cause hemolysis.,...on
the list of forbidden drugs is sulfa. We thought that perhaps we should be super cautious and
ask if a patient suffers from lack of G6PD...and if so, at least ask if she eats cabbage. Bye
the way since our last cabbage discussions we had a mother complain of "scalded"
red skin after using cabbage. Nobody saw her unfortuanately so I can only report this as
anecdotal. -------------------------------------
