Child only gained 1# between 9 month and 12 month check up, came back at
>13 mo and had LOST 6 oz.

Did this little boy, by chance, just start to crawl or walk at around 9
months, so that his activity levels increased dramatically? For there to
actually be a loss between 12 and 13 months is worth looking into, but I
think it is possible that a marked increase in physical activity could at
least partly explain even a small weight loss. Unless this little guy's
weight had been of concern prior to 9 months old, I think it would be
reasonable to just keep an eye on it over the next month or so, keep
encouraging him to eat, but certainly not do anything drastic.

My first son, Stephen, grew like a mushroom for his first four months, from
an average sized newborn to a little pudge! He didn't sleep much, and got
bored easily, and as a new mother, I fed him every time he made a peep. We
thought we were going to have a big linebacker on our hands! Then,
suddenly, he learned to belly crawl, and he was never still again! At the
same time, he started eating less, because he had new things to investigate
and get into. He gained very little weight for the next several months,
although he continued getting taller. We watched him fall from 90th
percentile in weight, at four months, down to about 40th, at 10 months.
Fortunately, the ped we went to at the time didn't think that was a problem,
as long as he was still healthy and active, and developing normally. He is
nearly 21 now, and has been slim his whole life, except for the first few
months.

As for adding calories, I don't know if this baby has had dairy, but I found
that a little bit of whipping cream was very helpful with putting weight on
Julia, whose weight was very much of concern (full-term baby, nine pounds at
six months). I just gave her about a tablespoonful per day of whipping
cream, mixed with her bottles (this was before I figured out how to get her
nursing). Our ped thought I was silly, and that we should give her powdered
formula mixed with less water than the standard dilution, but I didn't think
restricting fluids was a good idea.

Aloha,
Darillyn
