Before this subject gets too tired, let me share what I saw the
other day. I was changing a diaper in the nursery during my assessment on a
slightly IUGR little guy and of course he peed on me. (I hadn't had my
coffee yet) The first 2 seconds it came out clear, then a squirt of
obviously thick, orange/pink came out (at this point I had decided saving
the crib sheet was a lost cause and was watching him pee haha), then the
urine went back to clear yellow. The sheet had a wet spot on it with a spot
of orange in the center. So it doesn't just happen after urination.
Brick dust seems to be totally normal in the first few days but I do
get concerned about hydration status after that. It is just one of those
things that flips the "look closer" switch in my head. I don't even say
anything to the parents (except reassurance that it isn't blood) - I just go
"hmmmm".
