Dear Friends:

Thank you Sandra for giving me the first communication from an
anesthesiologist that was knowledgeable and respectful about breastfeeding. How we need
such practitioners!

In my part of the country, anesthesia has, in some hospitals, routinely
taken one full class of a 6-class childbirth series since the middle 1990s. I
hear amazement from hospital staff that take breastfeeding courses I teach when
we cover the connection between epidurals and breastfeeding; I can't count
the number of nurses that are astounded, because they believe what the
anesthesiologists are telling mothers "epidurals are totally safe for the baby, none
of the medicine gets to the baby." We cover the research by Torvaldson and
Matthiesson and Ransjo-Arvidson, and you could hear a pin drop in class.

I have never in my hospital career encountered any anesthesiologist that
didn't like labor and delivery; all these practitioners have been ready,
willing, and eager to ply their trade.

warmly,
