Thanks to all who have shared thoughts on this so far, especially to those
who shared personal stories which reflect some very tough life experiences.
Don't stop! The topic is still active.

As breastfeeding becomes the norm we have to expect to see manifestations of
the backgrounds of women who, half a generation ago, might never have
considered their bodies fit to produce food for a baby. We need to
accommodate them, and we - that is, people who care about breastfeeding
enough to be knowledgeable about it - need to be the ones offering them
informed guidance on their terms. A mother who has experienced being
respected will have an easier time respecting herself, and probably her
children, and if that respect arises in the context of breastfeeding
guidance, it is likely to make it easier for her to discuss the things that
influenced her decisions about feeding. It may even make it possible for
her to consider trying things she may have been repelled by initially,
because she knows there are other options.

It all comes down to respect, and taking women seriously. Stick to those
principles and you'll have a lot of joy in your work.
