I am way late in answering Lori's inquiry as to whether anyone else has
already done this, that is, had a tent at fairs and events for
breastfeeding mothers. I searched and didn't find anyone else answering
about what we have done in Indiana. Our Indiana Mother's Milk Bank has a
Lactation Station at our state fair every year. Last year (3rd or 4th
year for it), there were 3 stations around the fair! They use dining
tent-type awnings, so that the sides can be tied back and left open,
which is how it was every time I worked in it. There are rocking chairs
aplenty (donated for temporary use by Cracker Barrel), a cooler of
bottled water and fans. They also have a table with informational
handouts for anyone, not just nursing moms to take. It's amazing the
people who stop by just for information! This is also a great way in
increase visibility of nursing moms, offer them a (relatively, when it's
hot) comfy place to sit and relax and feed their baby without being
tucked away behind a wall or screen somewhere. The tents are manned by
volunteers from around the state for the entire run of the fair. One
year when I went to do my allotted time, the young man who is in charge
of setting this all up and keeping it running for the Milk Bank (yes, a
young man!) told me that the day before, which had been Band Day, a
group of young male band members were wandering around the fair and
stopped by. He talked them into donning the Milk Bank t-shirts given to
all workers, and walking around the fair to publicize it! He said they
ended up enjoying it, and I have no doubt it increased interest in
breastfeeding among the younger female population who saw them! If
you'd like to see pics of one of the stations, go to the Milk Bank's
website, http://www.clarian.org/portal/IMMilkBank, click on archives,
then Indiana State Fair. This shows the screened sides down, and also
shows the toppers on the trolleys with breastfeeding messages. These
stations have been very well received and, as mother to a mom who has
needed to use the tent, I am pleased it was available for my daughter.
Good luck Lori and anyone else trying to set up places at fairs, malls,
airports or anywhere else!

Marsha, grand-Mimi to five now!
