Barbara,

Is there any chance the mother was pregnant when her toddler was 18 months?

I have permission to post. Mother is pumping breastmilk for a baby inour NICU. The baby was born at 25 weeks gestation and is now 32 weeks.Mother breastfed her first child until he was 18 months old. At thattime she began to get irritable sensations while nursing the toddler. She describes it as having felt like a hair on your face that you can'twipe off, brushing against a spider web and the "yucky, itchy"feelingthat you get but eventually it evolved into feeling like fingernails ona blackboard. Initially it was brief but it began to last through thewhole nursing period. Although she and her lc at the time did a lot ofresearch and tried a lot of remedies, nothing really helped. Now it isstarting while she is pumping for this baby. She really wants tobreastfeed this baby and to continue to give him her milk. She has anexcellent supply but she is afraid that this sensation will continue toget worse as it did with her first child. Any ideas of what
is going onor suggestions of ways to help? She definitely does not associate itwith let down or oxytocin response. Thank you for whatever ideas orsuggestions you have. Barbara McKeever, RN, IBCLC
