It was fascinating to read Maureen Minchion's historical musings about the
origens of hindmilk/foremillk discussions, and the info on breast-binding.
One of the great aspects of Lactnet is the continuity it allows between
generations of LCs. We really do need to know our roots and to acknowledge
the contribution of some of our pioneers, whose thinking, theorizing, and
techniques might otherwise be lost. It IS, as Maureen suggests, fascinating
to read this earlier work, and we constantly re-invent the wheel if we do
not.

I esp, appreciated the remark that "before we dismiss the experience of
mothers" we need to investigate the efficacy of techniques like binding and
learn how to do it correctly. It was the exper. of mothers who told me that
(in spite of cautions against them) they had saved their lactations thru the
use of nipple shields that I overcame my prejudice against them and tried to
learn how they work. Maureen is right. A tool is just a tool, and can be
used or mis-used based on the skill of the technician. I would like to
suggest that at our conferences we have demonstrations of how to use these
techniques.
