We do not give out anything locally. But we are working really hard to get
the resources together to do a Books for Babes program similar to a couple
of other communities. These are cloth bags which contain information on
reading to children, contact lists of resources, an invitation to the local
library, a simple board book,(chosen by a child librarian), a toy (chosen
by our Infant Development Program) and maybe even a CD of nursery rhymes
and songs. This is intended to be part of our community early literacy
campaigns..... If hospitals REALLY feel the need to have their patients
walk out with a gift I wonder if something similar would not be
acceptable... I can just see the marketing and advertising by for-profit
hospitals...
This program is not being driven by any need on our part to replace formula
gift packs as they disappeared more than a decade ago. And no all the ills
of marketing did not disappear at the same time :(
