Dear Kathleen and Pamela,
I was the first lactation consultant to be employed in a hospital in
Singapore, and lately I'm also the first lactation consultant to be in
private practice. So these issues of charges have come to the fore- it
has not been easy charging for services which I have done for free for
years!
These are the following areas which I charge my clients for:
1. Face to face consultations- which includes a home visit or a visit to
my office, the charges are time-rated. Telephone consults are charged
also, (time-rated) if the client calls me herself. I do not charge for
making the follow-up myself.
2. Rental/purchase of breastfeeding related products- breastpumps,
nipple creams, breastfeeding blouses, baby slings - These are retail
products.
3. Breastfeeding information - I charge for the effort I've taken to
source the information for the client - I've written notes for my
clients, and if I need to photocopy them, I charge for the photocopied
materials.(like a resource library). They will need to sign a form for
all my services as I'm not covered by insurance yet. Since I've just
left the hospital on the 15th July this year. I've not found any
insurance coverage for myself yet.
Hope that answers your questions.
Doris Fok, lactation consultant in private practice, Singapore
