I was able to purchase a glass and rubber nipple shield just a few years
ago, in Nuevo Laredo, just across the Texas-Mexican border. It was available in
a little pharmacia, still on the shelf for mothers to purchase and use at
the breast. The pharmacist couldn't understand my horror and delight at being
able to find such a rarity (for me, anyway).

I saw antique nipple shields in a display case in one of the period =
homes in the village of Old Salem, NC, settled 1766. They looked *just* =
like today's... but they were glass! I can't imagine that they worked =
well at all, but was fascinated that the shape hasn't changed. A lack =
of R&D?=20
