Has anyone considered the very common phenomenon of gastroenteritis causing a _transient_ lactose intolerance?  

Gastro can have a destructive effect on the villi of the small intestine resulting in deficient lactase.  I appreciate that BM has its own lactase, so this may not be the problem.
