I seem to remember reading an article (in JHL?) that seemed to say that in
invitro testing, breastmilk deactivated the virus. The CDC and WHO seem to
have opposite opinions on this one.
<<<<<<Food for thought: Has anyone looked into reports of supposed HIV
transmission through breatmilk to see if the mother's had bleeding nipples or
the *rusty pipe* milk we see post partum. Maybe the transmission occured from
 blood not breastmilk>>>>>>
I was nursing my daughter in 1992 when I recieved 22 units of blood during
surgery. I was assured that the blood supply is *safe* but I was still
concerned. My hospital has a protocol for HIV testing post suspected exposure
: testing is done at 6 weeks, 6 months, one year and two years (I should
mention that this protocol was applied only at my request. It was set up
primarily for people who had a known exposure) If it's *safe* after 6 months
why the protocol to two years? I did continue to nurse, but I felt really
guilty!!!! And needless to say my husband and I chose to practice safe sex.
Fortunately all tests were neg. but the anxiety didn't go away until that 12
month test came in.
