Hi, all.

There's a very effective calming method used at Jewish ritual
circumcisions. The mother breastfeeds the baby immediately before
the procedure. during the procedure, a square of gauze with a raisin
in the middle is dipped in sweet (Kiddush) wine and held at the
baby's lips, allowing him to suck the wet gauze. Immediately after the
procedure, the mom nurses again. (You may have a bit of trouble
getting the pedi to allow wine; this isn't a problem at ritual circs, where
it's required that the baby be given a taste of the kiddush wine.)
