This message was addressed to someone specific but these are the few
references I have on the topic.

Cugalj, N. and D. Moore. 1984. Curent Considerations in Neonatal
Conjunctivitis. Journal of Nurse-Midwifery 29(3):197-204. (sIgA, with high
concentrations in human colostrum, inhibits bacterial adherence to mucosal
surfaces and limits bacterial colonization of the ocular epithelium.)
.
Hanson, LA. and J. Winburg. 1972. Breastmilk and Defence Against Infection
in the Newborn. Archives of Disease in Childhood 47:845-848.

Ho, P.C. and J. Lawton. 1978. Human colostral cells: Phagocytosis and
killing of E. coli and C. albicans. The Journal of Pediatrics 93(6):910-915.
(sIgA, with high concentrations in human colostrum, inhibits bacterial
adherence to mucosal surfaces and limits bacterial colonization of the ocular
epithelium.)

Isenberg, S.J., Apt, L., and M. Wood. 1995. A controlled trial of
Povione-Iodine as Prophylaxis Against Ophthalmis Neonatorum. N Engl J Med
332: 562-566.

Lawrence, R.A. 1989. Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession,
third edition. The C.V. Mosby Company: St. Louis, MO.

Singh, M., Sugathan, P.S. and R.A. Bhujwala. 1982. human Colostrum for
Prophylaxis Against Sticky Eyes and Conjunctivitis in the Newborn. J of
Tropical Pediatrics 28:35-37. (Found that instillation of human colostrum
significantly reduced the incidence of chemical conjunctivitis and reduced
bacterial colonization of the eye.)

I'm sure there is much more, and more current but I thought I'd share what
was in my files.
