Hi there. There are several things here that disturb me. First, an LC
should not be giving instructions to mothers on how or what to use as
medication...unless prescribed by a physician. Now, that is not to say that
I do not advise moms about resources, show them Jack's information (as he
is an MD, www.breastfeedingonline.com), ..etc....or point in the direction
of resources and references that recommend medication. I do. However, the
problem can come when information may be mistakenly interpreted. In this
case, I do not think that mupirocin is antifungal. If you want, check out
the webpage above for a good yeast protocol by Dr. Newman.

Subject: bactroban and yeast?
A mom that I am talking with has been diagnosed with yeast and was given
these instruction by her LC. "apply a small amount of bactroban (mupirocin)
ointment to the area that the baby's mouth covers. Mupirocin is both
antifungal and antibacterial." I have not been able to find any reference to
the fact that it is also anti-fungal. She is also using steroid cream on her
nipple but no other anti-fungal cream.
She is also pumping and not nursing until her nipples heal.
Can anyone help me out here? Is this a commonly used treatment for yeast?
She is not using it as part of Jack's APNO which was the only consistent
reference I could find for using it.
Thanks.
