Beloved Lactnetters,
I am a bit behind in my reading, but I need to second
Pamela's post, which arose from the BFing 100 times
per day thread, about nursing mothers trying to get to
the salon, the mall, etc.

Many, many moms I meet are trying to do so much STUFF
in their lives, they seem to struggle with fitting a
baby in to lives that are already jam-packed. One of
the saddest situations I have seen to date was a
mother who was weeping, having trouble w/ BFing her
newborn. We talked about some strategies. She said
she had no time to implement them, because she was
"too busy" with "all the activities" of her two older
children, ages 5 and 3, including preschool, sports
teams, etc. I was struck mute by this, since this
poor lady was indicating, to me, that she felt a great
deal of pressure to continue her usual schedule, **and
we had this conversation on POSTPARTUM DAY NUMBER 3**.
I saw another mom this past spring whose baby was not
feeding well by 36 hours of age; I asked her if she
would consider staying one more night to work on BFing
(insurance would have allowed this). No, out of the
question. Nosy me, I had to ask. She "had" to get
home to make an Easter basket for her 20 month-old,
and get Easter dinner ready for the guests who were
arriving the next day.

What are we doing to ourselves, and to what ends?
AND WHY?! Many of us are driving ourselves slowly
insane with our quest for...what? Perfection? A
sense of control? Meanwhile, our precious children,
and the astounding ability our bodies have to nourish
them, gets placed lower and lower on the priority
list, and our lives are robbed of joy.

Okay, I'm stepping off the soapbox.
Carole
