Lynelle & Lactnuts,
All the peds & nurses at our hospital consider a 10% weight loss in a normal
NB to be OK. Most assess the baby-eating, stools, voids, activity, etc. and if
all this is within reasonable limits, no supplementation is suggested. Of
course we have those who think that no harm will come to a baby who has had a
bottle once or twice. (If 10% wt. loss is normal why do we even have to
consider supplementing?) We can never seem to get those nurses to attend
breastfeeding classes. Oh, if only I could convince the administration that
these classes should be mandatory!!! We just got a new director of maternal-
child services on board, so I'll try again. This seems to be a continuing
problem in many hospitals as Dr. Jack will tell you.
THEN, one of those nurses who has never attended a breastfeeding class, tells
me to check on a young mom who is trying to BF her newborn. This nurse thinks
that she should NOT BF because she smokes and is too stupid! Woe is me!!!!
Thanks for listening.
