When women pump with the angled shields the nipples are not bent. For some
women, the problem with the standard flanges (like Medela, Ameda, etc) is
that there is a sharp angle from the part that goes over the breast to the
tube the nipple is drawn into. I often see women with tender
nipples/areolas due to that sudden angle in the standard flanges. I even
sometimes see women with trauma at the base of the nipple (even when the
flange is the correct size) due to the tissue stopping at the juncture of
the tube <the nipple is drawn into> and the part that is on the breast. You
can even see the tissue turn red and look stressed with pumping even on the
lowest setting. I hope this makes sense.

The angled shield allows for more contact with the areola as well as
eliminating any 'stopping' of the breast tissue as it is being drawn into
the flange. What happens is there is a smooth pumping action for the breast
- no tissue gets stopped at any point - it is all drawn in comfortably. The
key is to fit the mom to the right size flange for maximum comfort and
drainage. I have had many moms actually get better milk drainage with the
angled shields - possibly because of the better fit, the less trauma to the
tissues and much more comfortable.

If possible, try to get your hands on a pair and try them out. They really
are pretty neat. They don't work for all women.but they do work well for
many.

(again stating that I sell them.so therefore have financial interest - then
again I also sell Medela stuff too.)
