Theresa (and others) asks:
If it's impossible to get enough Vitamin D from the sun, how did people survive all these generations?

I think one factor is the amount of stuff in the air these days. I saw a NOVA program a number of months back about how much our sunlight has reduced in recent decades. One example is the reports that some scientists noticed more sunlight available in the US while air traffic was suspended after the attacks on the WTC in 9/11/01. We think that because we see blue sky, there isn't pollution. We think of air pollution as having to be like smog to be significant, but apparantly, there is enough "stuff" in our atmosphere that wasn't there in past generations to filter out enough rays to contribute to Vit D problems in more individuas than in past generations.
This is beginning to stray from breastfeeding per se, so I won't try to go any further with it.
