Like the others -I would encourage this mom to nurse on both breasts.  I had a mom who also presented with a horrendous mastitis requiring surgery under general anesthesia.  Because of the location of incision she was not able to pump or express that side and continued to nurse exclusive on the other.  After 8 weeks when the affected side was healed, we started it up again and she is still nursing on both sides at 20 months.  She also is now a LLL leader!  Like I always say, " never say never!"
