Dear Friends,

A close friend, who is also a breastfeeding advocate, lost her baby.
Knowing that if she donated milk to a bank, it was not very likely to go to
a baby in need. So she struggled with whether to donate or not.

My question for those of you who have been involved in milk banks or are
interested in this topic:

Has anyone come up with a model or have a suggestion on how to open a milk
bank, that stays financially afloat without having to lie in bed with the
enemy? A Mennonite woman told me this past week that years ago (maybe 10?)
when she lived in Pennsylvania that she was paid very well to express milk
(manually, I might add!). Later she learned that most of her milk went to
research. It made her sick.

I welcome discussion about this.

Warmly,
Nikki Simmons

Subject: human milk component patenting

Donating human milk needs to be rethought. Why? Because we have
corporations, institutions, and researchers harvesting/mining components for
use in drugs, infant formula but we don't have a societal commitment to
breastfeeding.
