having been publicly attacked on this list several times, i will agree, it
isn't pleasant. and i wish to humbly apologize to kathy publicly because that
is not what i meant at all. the original post said nothing about the
recommendations to consider donor milk; it rather sounded as if the idea were
dismissed out of hand because of the unusual needs of the baby (dairy - soy
allergies). and though i would certainly agree we can't know everything,
breastmilk and substitutes are our business, and we should know as much about
breastmilk as we do the substitutes, and recommend HM, as it turns out she
did. breasts don't make formula, they make breastmilk. i am not an expert on
milk banking either, but i know the basics of recommending it and
facilitating its use. i did not mean that kathy was also selling equipment
to the mom, just that that particular item on the list referred to observing
the code by recommending HM before ABM.

this also brings up a couple of questions that occurred to me, one is, how
many babies have we seen that are truly allergic to both soy and dairy? i
have seen or heard about (by email) two babies who may truly have been in
that category.

also, i was recalling that two moms that were at first not interested in
donor milk both used the exact same words "oh, i would NEVER do that!" i
asked in a neutral way why not, and it turned out neither were aware of the
standard procedures for treating the milk, and had what we would probably
best describe as "safety concerns." i do encounter people who quit using
donor milk because of continued cost over the long term (they usually use it
for at least the acute situation), but i haven't run into any other major
reasons for not using it, except for parents who find their HCPs are not
supportive and override their wishes in hospitals. any other interesting
reasons?

and as dr. rob sometimes tells me when i ask him a mother question (as
opposed to a baby question) "maybe its old age." meaning, i asked him a
question about an adult and because he treats children he isn't sure of the
answer.
