Hi, Pamela: Our hospital system (11 hospitals) has been looking into this
issue. The hospital I work at has a Level II NSy with exception. We have
been storing EBM in Medela CSF bags which are given to mothers at d/c. The
small amts the moms get with initial pumpings we have been drawing up into
and storing in syringes. Both syringes and bags of milk are stored double-
bagged (ziploc) in our fridge/freezer. One of our Level III nurseries has
been trialing a storage box system, whereby EBM is stored in capped labeled
volufeeds inside square plastic hinged boxes which are color-coded. Upon
admission each baby is assigned a color and all milk is color-coded for
that baby. Because of the continuing problem with availability of volu-
feeds, especially the caps, our nsy nurses are recommending that d/c'd
mothers buy Gerber brand ziploc milk storage bags. They are saying that
the bags are durable and much easier for all to handle, being ziploc
instead of twist tie. These are also color-coded and stored in the hinged
boxes.
Hopefully, someone will come up with the ideal system!
