I'm probably going to state the obvious because I'm frustrated. Is it not
the sucking rather than the tool that may be preventative? And if so, what
is nature's *primary* natural tool/design to provide such sucking? Why
aren't these people asking the right questions?

I guess using a pacifier allows them to have their cake and eat it too--
gives baby the sucking and also minimizes his time in the parental bed,
Avoiding the need to re-visit co-sleeping. But if one follows these clues
to their logical conclusion, the natural design would be a baby having free
access to the breast, suckling off and on. This is in contrast to the
traditional western view of baby care that believes that babies should be
fed at intervals only and that such on and off feeding at night is too
draining for mother and setting up bad habits for baby. Apparently we just
don't want to go there, so it is much easier to bury our heads in the sand,
avoid wrestling with the facts that are staring us in the face, and instead
create an artificial way to meet these "safety" requirements.

Given that SIDS does not occur at the same rate in all societies, wouldn't
it make sense to find out what is done differently in those that have lower
rates than we do? But instead we keep patching up our own broken infant
care system with artificial solutions when we really need to go back to
ground zero and re-examine our philosophies and practices from the ground
up. We are so smart and even so much more stupid!
