Anne and Netters,
There has been a couple of posts in regards to sore nipples and pumping and I
would like to comment that this is again where we can get confused with the
abuse and misuse of BF products.  To use a pump with any sore nipple is
ridiculous.  But when a mother has a VERY sore nipple (cracked, bleeding,
shooting pain, etc) and says " I can not stand to hear the baby cry when it
is time to feed because feedings hurt so much"  then a pump, preferably
hospital-grade electric where you can regulate the suction would be
appropriate.  It relaxes mom so her milk supply is not interupted.  And it
will help to heal her nipple up faster.   First, she should be seen to see
what is causing the sore nipple, whether it be change of position, change of
sucking, treatment of yeast, etc.  If the mom has low tolerance for pain or
just "can't stand it" then a pump can be used in the interim to allow the
nipple to heal.  Then baby is gradually put back to breast.  We are only
talking a few days here, not weeks.  At least that is my experience.  I would
love if the US, my community at least, would even be open to hand expression.
 When I use to demo hand expression in my BF Classes, the mothers would look
at me like I was from outer space or from the dark ages.  That is just like
it is here.  I think everyone should demo it along with renting pumps so at
least the exposure would be there.  Unfortunately, that is not the reality
here in US.  The mind set is too much technology oriented.  Why I am on my
box here, I want to metion that I do not ever suggest a nipple shield for a
sore nipple.  I lied.  An older baby that is teething and biting, big time,
and taking chunks out of mom's nipple, I will then suggest to use one for a
short period.  Nipple shields can only make sore nipples worse, especially if
it is undiagnosed yeast.  Please try to use BF products appropriately.
