A recent poster commented that with small breasts the c-hold may
have too many fingers in the way. I find that small breasted moms
don't need to hold the breast as much as the more endowed do. I
recommend that mom place her hand flat against her chest under the
breast and then move as many fingers forward under the breast as
needed. With the A and sometimes B cup moms, they often don't need
to move any fingers forward, just place the thumb on top to help aim
the nipple up. Once latched, she may need no further support or may
still need to lift with the fingers at the chest wall.
The one time that I have found a "v-hold" helpful is when a baby is
overwhelmed by the fast milk flow. As long as mom has her fingers
far enough back that she's not pulling the nipple out of baby's
mouth, compressing with the scissors or v hold for the first minute
or so of the feed will slow the flow long enough for baby to be
able to handle it.
As may others have said-if it ain't broke, don't fix it. When an
experienced mom is using a technique that is NOT what we would teach
a new mom, I ask enough questions to be sure it is working well,
then make a comment something like:"That seems to work well for
you. Sometimes moms have less success with that approach
because..... As long as it works, keep it up.
If....................develops, you might want to try other
approaches."
