Nikki and others
I agree with Nikki, I don't focus on problems. I just get up and talk
without any agenda. After doing this for so many years I can just 'shoot
from the hip.' I basically emphasize nurse early (exclusive bf), nurse
often, room in, importance of good positioning and latch (these things
basically will prevent most all problems). and how to tell baby is getting
enough milk. yes call me for help, i make f/u calls anyway. i try to
remember to mention there are very few reasons to ever stop bf like they can
bf on most meds, and with a cold or fever. and i try to remember to say diet
restrictions are not needed. i like to say a few words about choosing a true
bf supporter for a pediatrician (as we have one who is notorious for messing
bf up w/ 4 hr schedules and solids at 3 wks). and i try to mention that if
they have any concerns about their breasts or nipples or have had surgery
etc to call me prenatally and we'll discuss and plan accordingly. of course
they can ask questions all along. i keep it informal and joke around. i've
always gotten very positive feedback on my classes.
